Histamine intolerance

Histamine intolerance is assumed to be caused by an increased concentration of histamine in the blood and often leads to diverse and partially very distinct complaints. One reason could be the reduced concentration of the histamine degrading enzyme diamine oxidase. The occurrence of this metabolic disease has been controversially discussed, as the detection method is very difficult and currently not valid. In a 24h measurement of histamine and diamine oxidase, we were able to show that in a relevant proportion of patients with histamine intolerance a reduced diamine oxidase concentration is currently present. Our team is now striving to improve the detection method for histamine intolerance and to integrate it into clinical diagnostics.
